A nine-storey residential tower block with integrated commercial use will replace the existing old building on the corner of Bielstrasse and Steinweg in Lyss. The design by the :mlzd team won first place in the corresponding study commission. The structural and façade planners from LÜCHINGER MEYER PARTNER are also delighted about this. The title of the project was chosen with care: the new building offers the future tenants of the 43 flats a ‘Weitblick’, and the planners demonstrated ‘Weitblick’ with regard to a sustainable design, as the jury explicitly emphasised: ‘The project authors have given extensive thought to the issue of sustainability.’
The façade concept envisages a green building envelope that is of high quality due to its shading and the resulting microclimate. The various façade constructions are proposed as layered constructions with simple, detachable connections in the sense of good system separation. Materials with low CO2 intensity such as wood, trass cement, Greensteel or Circal 100 aluminium are used.

The design principle of the supporting structure provides for a skeleton construction in timber-concrete hybrid construction, whereby the materials are used according to their strengths. With the preservation of the existing basement (ReUse), the targeted use of timber and recycled concrete as well as a high level of robustness and flexibility of use, the structure makes a significant contribution to sustainability.
The assessment panel also came to this conclusion: ‘The building materials for the construction of the new building fulfil ecological criteria. The primary construction for the load-bearing system is largely made of wood, which as a renewable raw material has a good energy balance. The planned system separation principle of the primary and secondary structures and the flexibility in the floor plan organisation guarantee a long life cycle, which has a positive effect on the ecological balance of the project.”
