Wahlverwandtschaften
For 20 years, the municipality of Mönchaltorf has dreamed of a new town hall. At last, the long-held wish is coming true, and all administration areas will be brought together in a single building on Rällikerstrasse. A new building for age-appropriate living at the same site complements the project, which was initiated by a total design competition. The submission titled “Elective affinity-Wahlverwandtschaften”, prepared by the ERNE AG Bauunternehmung/ERNEplus and SAM ARCHITEKTEN team, achieved second place. The design envisions two buildings that are clearly differentiated according to their respective requirements.
The structural engineers involved from LÜCHINGER MEYER PARTNER are particularly pleased with the jury’s careful engagement with the proposed structural system and the appreciative feedback : “Due to the relatively large floor spans of the town hall, the chosen materiality through reinforced concrete and masonry appears correct and consistent. The arrangement of the vertical load-bearing elements and the well-placed core for access allow clean load transfer in both horizontal and vertical directions. For the residential building, the materialization of the structure is also well thought out. The reinforced concrete structure of the regular floors, combined with the purely timber attic and a hybrid facade, implements the chosen materialisation and methods in accordance with their advantages and enables an optimized construction timeline.»
