The foundation stone, which was laid on the 13th of February in the deepest excavation pit in the Basel city area, is both a significant milestone in terms of symbolism and construction technology. On the one hand, it marks the start of construction on the generational Campus Health project: the basement shell of the bed tower, which will form part of the new Clinic 2 of the University Hospital, is already clearly visible. On the other hand, it marks the completion of the foundation work and the handover of the baton to the structural engineering team.
We look back with pride on the successful completion of this special geotechnical engineering project, whose complexity also plays an exceptional role in the project history of LÜCHINGER MEYER PARTNER. The impressive specifications alone, such as the enormous excavation volume of 120,000 m³, the record excavation depth of 26 m achieved, the bored pile wall secured with up to 8 anchor layers, 590 anchors installed and over 200 bored piles, underline the special demands of this urban civil engineering project. In addition, the execution required prescient staging of the work to accommodate the many dependencies with ongoing hospital operations and dense surrounding buildings.
The photo gallery impressively illustrates the ‘open-heart surgery’ that would not have been possible without the cooperation of the planning and execution teams at the highest level. In addition to those responsible at the University Hospital Basel and our partners at the ARCADIA planning consortium, we would like to express our special thanks to the skilled contractors at ARGE K2 AG – consisting of Marti AG Basel, Marti AG Zurich, Implenia Schweiz AG and Eberhard Bau AG – for their partnership and valuable cooperation!
