The White House of Andermatt

Andermatt Reuss is a new district that complements the Alpine village of Andermatt. High-quality apartment blocks and hotels have been built around Piazza Gottardo, meeting high standards of sustainability and incorporating traditional building methods. With its white-plastered and whitewashed façade and a base featuring faux rustication created using the sgraffito technique, the Andermatt building draws on Alpine architectural tradition and stands out as a striking feature within the complex.

The structural engineers at LÜCHINGER MEYER PARTNER supported the design and construction of this geometrically complex solid-structure building alongside Ilg Santer Architects and the general contractor A++. The seven-storey residential building was constructed as a solid-structure building with a timber roof structure. The spatial backbone of the apartments is formed by a sequence of polygonal rooms: from the stairwell through the two-storey hall to the living room, which opens out on three sides. Three bay windows and various irregularly offset window openings characterise the building’s design.
