Good orientation and a welcoming, bright appearance are very important for the redevelopment of the drive at the Zürich airport. The place should receive a new visual identity and offer a high-quality stay using only a few simple measures. A nearly 350 m long roof construction on the upper departure level composes the opening to the new situation. It creates a connection between the existing buildings through its simple geometry. Regarding the roof cladding, the focus lies on the underside and on the tip, which are the two characterising elements of the roof. Thus, the roof top was created with conventional trapezoidal sheet metal. On the other hand, the underside is extensively perceived by the crowd. Due to the large dimensions and the flat viewing angle much value was placed on an even surface. This was achieved by using aluminium honeycomb plates with a thickness of 20 mm. The roof tip which primarily becomes visible at the ends runs along the whole roof length as a horizontal line. Especially the curved form is geometrically demanding. At this point the roof adjusts to a horizontal turning behaviour and a vertical change in altitude. Only an absolutely proper planning as well as an uncompromising manufacturing and installation ensure transitions and joints free of edges and offsets.
