Due to projected growth in student numbers in the communities of Bachs, Neerach, Stadel and Weiach, the Stadel secondary school will be expanded. A new building with classrooms, rooms for daily activities and a double sports hall will complement the school campus. The competition design “Solana” was awarded first place. The architectural team at Schmid Ziörjen Architektenkollektiv proposes a three-storey, freestanding building that blends into the existing complex. “The project has been very carefully and logically designed. All aspects appear to have been precisely planned and complement each other. The building’s expression is characterised by its clear, fine structure and spatial depth, which creates a pleasant lightness and openness,” the jury explained its decision.
The structure designed by LÜCHINGER MEYER PARTNER is organised into three structural layers: the basement box made of in-situ concrete, the ground floor, which is free except for the surrounding column rings, and the upper floors above, which appear to float, formed as a composite structure.
The concept follows a clearly structured, symmetrical system with vertical material differentiation. The various building materials – concrete, wood and steel – are used in such a way that their respective advantages are ideally exploited. The two-storey steel trusses are one of the defining features of the building, spanning the double sports hall above the ground floor and supporting the loads of the upper floors. The structure is completed by a covered walkway with pergola and balcony elements on either side, which are designed as additional elements in a lightweight timber construction. Thanks to the high ratio of prefabricated elements, the structure can be assembled in a short period of time.
We are pleased to have received recognition from the jury: “The clear structure allows flexible room layout and long-term adaptability, even for open learning environments. … The truss work is outstanding in terms of the spatial volume it creates and seems to be the reason for this choice.”
