Widen’s finest school building has been topped out

A small tree and a big celebration last Thursday in Widen – the topping-out ceremony for the new school building was held. Representatives from the school and the local council, planning firms and contractors gathered to mark the completion of the structural work. Even now, the building exudes a particularly bright and airy atmosphere, which is set to accompany learning and working from autumn 2026 onwards. The school management conveyed the pupils’ anticipation and their hope that construction noise will soon no longer disturb their beloved drama lessons. The architects Renate Walter and Sebastian Kirsch from WALDRAP were impressed by how well the shell structure already conveys the character of the competition renderings. The structural engineering team from LÜCHINGER MEYER PARTNER, who were also present, were delighted with the invitation to the topping-out ceremony and the successful project.

The school building complements the existing complex. An underground double-height sports hall, constructed as a solid reinforced concrete plinth, supports the lightweight timber-concrete hybrid structure above it, which houses the six classrooms alongside group rooms and the after-school care facilities. The structural grid of the sports hall is rotated relative to the upper floors. The loads are transferred via prestressed hall girders with maximum spans of 28.5 m, ceilings and wall panels.

We would like to thank everyone involved for their highly cooperative and goal-oriented collaboration!
