Under the motto “We Are Glass”, the glass industry is gathering in Düsseldorf at the moment. From 20 to 23 October, manufacturers, designers and researchers will come together for glasstec, the world’s leading trade fair. The Circularity Two event, which forms part of the trade fair programme, demonstrates how circular approaches in the glass and façade industries are taking the next step: from initial successful applications to viable processes and scalable standards.
On Wednesday, Enrico Cutri (Dow Europe) and Philippe Willareth (LÜCHINGER MEYER PARTNER) will share their research and project experiences on the circular economy in practice as part of this programme. Their presentation, with the catchy title “We just did it…”, refers to a successful refurbishment project that focused on reducing CO₂ equivalents through re-use and on-use, as well as achieving high thermal performance. Existing parapet elements were upgraded using silicone as an enabler material. A thin layer of net-zero silicone makes it possible to integrate the existing glass into a structural composite with a second layer of material.
The realisation that flat re-use and on-use materials can be efficiently reprocessed makes it possible to apply this method to other projects. One example is the PER 10 in Fribourg, where the glass panes available on site are being reused as façade cladding in the building’s next life cycle.
Both speakers will then take part in a panel discussion with other experts on the key theme of “Secondary Resources“.
