ACHE 2025 – A Swiss Perspective

From June 25 to 27, 2025, the IX Congress of the Spanish Association of Structural Engineering (ACHE) will take place in Granada. This event will once again provide an excellent opportunity to strengthen both national and international connections among professionals and specialists in the field of structural engineering.
LÜCHINGER MEYER PARTNER will be represented at the congress by Borja Herraiz, the Head of our Madrid office. With several years of experience as a project manager for structural design at our Zurich office, Borja will bring valuable Swiss insights to the event. In his presentation, titled “Preservation, Reuse, and Expansion of Building Structures: A Swiss Perspective”, he will share his expertise in the preservation of buildings.
The presentation will take place on Thursday, June 27, during SESIÓN TÉCNICA 5: Realizaciones Edificación (Chair: Peter Tanner) in Aula 205.

Switzerland has set the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero. With approximately 38% of CO₂ emissions originating from the building sector, thoughtful and responsible structural design can play a key role in significantly lowering the carbon footprint.
In his article, Borja Herraiz presents building projects from our office that showcase innovative strategies for preservation and sustainable development. He offers insights into major conversion projects such as the Felix Platter Hospital in Basel and the Du Pont building in Zurich, as well as current initiatives like the Rämi reservoir in Zurich and the WIFAG site in Bern.
Additionally, he will highlight our first successful applications of circular design principles in practice, exemplified by the remanufacturing of parapet glass at the Herostrasse building in Zurich.
