en passant

“Parzelle GB 6129” on the eastern edge of the municipality of Düdingen in the canton of Fribourg is one of the last major development sites in the area. Based on the “Wohnen in der Brugera” competition, a contemporary residential development with both owner-occupied and rental apartments is planned here. The first-prize project, “en passant” by Sauter Schmid Architekten, responds to the site’s distinctive location with an ensemble of four longitudinal buildings rotated in relation to each other, mediating between village and landscape. The uniform structural grids of the very compact building volumes enable a highly flexible layout typology. “The project convinces the jury with its precise concept, which is consistently carried through all levels. Starting from the urban design approach through to access, housing typologies, and construction, the design appears highly coherent.”

The hybrid structural design by LÜCHINGER MEYER PARTNER utilizes reinforced concrete for the basement and stabilizing core walls, while the remaining structural elements consist of prefabricated timber components. We are particularly pleased by the jury’s special praise: “The proposed use of hollow box floor slabs combines efficiency in load-bearing capacity, sound insulation, and resource use. The remaining materialization is also designed for high durability and a low carbon footprint. The basement and parking areas are decoupled from one another, which, although resulting in an increased wall surface area, allows for an optimized structural concept.” It should also be mentioned that together with Mentha Walther Architekten, we achieved 3rd place in the competition, which is also a very pleasing result!
