The newly constructed north building on the Zollikerberg hospital site creates new capacity for the maternity department as well as space for state-of-the-art operating rooms.
The new building comprises an attic, an upper and a ground floor as well as a basement which serves as a parking level. The floor plan of the structure is rectangular with dimensions of approx. 53m x 32m, and the overall building height is approx. 16m. The basement and ground floor as well as the upper floors were built in solid concrete. The floor slabs, which span up to 13m, are designed with hollow core inserts and have a ceiling thickness of 44cm.
The attic floor, which is stepped back in the building’s ground plan, is used as a technical floor. The structure of the attic floor as well as the three external escape staircases were executed in steel construction.
The new building was partially built on top of the existing underground GOPS (protected operating room). Its foundation is capable of bearing the additional loads. In the areas outside the existing building parts, the loads are transferred into the ground by means of micropiles.
The bracing of the new building against horizontal loads is provided by the truss-like inclined columns in the façade layer.
In addition to the construction of the new north wing, the project includes conversion work in the adjacent center/treatment wing.
