The Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects regularly organises the ‘Exemplary Building’ award procedure with the Lake Constance district. The award recognises buildings whose construction methods, intentions, ideas or implementation are exemplary.
This year’s award ceremony focussed in particular on the impact of the buildings on urban development, sustainability and inclusivity for the participation of all people in this building project. We are delighted that the façade greening of the Friedrichshafen Technical Town Hall is one of the award-winning projects for ‘Exemplary Building Lake Constance District 2018-2024’.
The existing Technical Town Hall of the city of Friedrichshafen was supplemented on the front with a green façade, which was realised by raderschallpartner landschaftsarchitekten in collaboration with Lüchinger+Meyer. The scaffolding, designed as a steel construction with climbing cables, is almost 39 metres long and 15 metres high.
We are pleased to quote the jury’s statement: «The new façade greening blends seamlessly into the existing building and offers numerous advantages for the urban environment. It is not only aesthetically pleasing, but above all helps to cool the building and its surroundings. In times of increasing heat and overheating in cities, it is an effective approach that actively contributes to improving the urban climate. The utilisation of rainwater from the surrounding area is a valuable example of how the principle of the sponge city can also be implemented in existing buildings. In addition, the façade greening creates tangible added value for the neighbourhood by increasing quality of life and biodiversity. It is an example of how innovative solutions can enrich the cityscape for new and existing buildings.»
