Start of construction of the new FHZ Graubünden

Only the sky over Chur was in a bad mood on Thursday a week ago. But the mood among the guests at the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Graubünden University of Applied Sciences building was one of anticipation and enthusiasm. Representatives from politics, the university and the planning team had gathered to mark the start of the canton’s largest building project, some of them wearing their traditional shirtsleeves at their work tools. Among the invited guests were the structural engineers from Lüchinger+Meyer, who are working on the project together with Giuliani Hönger Architects. For the design team in particular, the transition from project planning to implementation is an important milestone that will significantly change the character of the project process.

Only three years after winning the competition and one and a half years after the approval by the electorate, the realisation of the major project is now starting, which remains highly dynamic due to the tight construction programme: The new building should be completed by the end of 2027. Move-in is planned for mid-2028. «The University of Applied Sciences of the Canton of Graubünden will not only be a place of identification, but also an attractive and future-oriented place of education, research and work for the coming generations in the Canton,» emphasised Cantonal Councillor Carmelia Maissen.
