The three ambitious clubs Tennisclub Aarau, Basketballclub Alte Kanti Aarau and the Volleyballclub des BTV Aarau intend to realise a supra-regional competitive sports centre for German-speaking Switzerland on the basis of a competition. Two triple sports halls, a 4-court tennis hall and infrastructure for up to 1500 spectators are to be combined in a new ball sports centre in Buchs.
According to the jury, the second-ranked project SOLARIS by the GP team :mlzd/Takt Baumanagement «impresses with its extremely conceptual considerations from large to small scale. Despite the high complexity of the task, the authors have succeeded in developing a simple and very functional architecture that creates a specific location in the landscape, an expressive building and atmospheric spaces while minimising the resources used.»
The design envisages a compact building volume, which can be attributed to the skilful arrangement of the partially recessed and stacked halls. A saddle roof spans the tennis hall at the top.
The supporting structure designed by LÜCHINGER MEYER PARTNER features seven triangular trusses with maximum heights of 8.5 metres, which span the 50-metre-wide building at intervals of 18.5 metres. They are supported on concrete-lined hollow steel columns. Pre-stressed concrete rib elements, which are inserted into the bottom chords of the trusses, form the hall ceilings. The roof over the tennis halls is designed as a wooden purlin construction made of glulam.
Our façade planners developed an opaque building envelope that is designed to fulfil the desired multiple functions. It serves both as a weather skin and also as a solar power station. Technically, a photovoltaic «rooftop and façade construction» is proposed. The vertical, transparent façades are generally inserted into the building volume so that additional external shading elements can be avoided.
